Ryan O’Neal, the beloved star of Love Story and Barry Lyndon, passed away on December 8, 2023, at 82 after battling leukemia, prostate cancer, and heart failure. Despite his fame, O’Neal’s personal life was overshadowed by scandals, especially his tumultuous relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett.

At his funeral, his son Redmond was notably absent, as he was confined to a state hospital. Similarly, two of O’Neal’s other children, Griffin and Tatum, also didn’t attend. Griffin, who had been estranged from his father for 17 years due to a violent dispute, revealed he wasn’t invited but had wished to attend. Tatum, who reconciled with her father in the late 2000s, expressed deep sorrow after his passing.

The intimate ceremony, held at Westwood Memorial Park, had only about 25 attendees. Ryan was buried next to Farrah, fulfilling his wish to be near her, though some questioned whether this went against Farrah’s final wishes. Despite the controversies, close friends defended the genuine love between Ryan and Farrah.
Ryan’s son, Patrick O’Neal, has publicly defended his father’s legacy, even speaking out when Ryan was left out of the Emmys’ memorial segment earlier that year. However, Ryan was later honored in the 2024 Emmys “In Memoriam” tribute.
