My friend had an old bread box passed down from her parents, which had been sitting in the shed, used for storing tools. When she decided to clean out the shed, she planned to throw it away to free up space. However, when I saw it, I knew I had to take it. I have a soft spot for vintage items and decided to give the bread box a makeover to turn it into a charming kitchen decoration.
The project was more challenging than I expected. First, I used a compressor to blow out all the dust and debris, then rinsed it with water from a bucket. It quickly became clear that the bread box needed significant repairs. The bottom was rusty, and the paint was peeling off.
I bought paint remover and applied it multiple times. Then, I poured boiling water over it to get rid of any leftover paint and rust. Afterward, I scrubbed the box with sandpaper, powder, and rust remover. The final step was cleaning it with a pressure washer, which blasted away all the tiny particles stuck in the cracks.
During this process, my neighbor, curious about the strange noises coming from my garden, peeked over the fence. Once the cleaning was done, I started painting. I chose white spray paint and applied several coats. After the paint dried, I used a stencil to add a brown inscription to the bread box.
Finally, I crafted new handles. My husband and I cut two curved handles from a wooden plank and attached them with screws. When my friend saw the revamped bread box, she immediately asked if she could have it back. I agreed, but only if she found me another old bread box to work on.
