This is not the start of a British detective story – it’s the real tale of how young Prince William once tried to “escape” the crown in order to protect the most important person in his life. According to royal biographer Andrew Morton (the same one who wrote the bombshell book Diana: Her True Story), there was once an amusing conversation between Princess Diana and her sons about their future.
Little William declared, “When I grow up, I’ll become a policeman and protect you, Mommy!” And this wasn’t a joke! The boy was serious about trading the crown for a police badge.
The Realist Brother But before the future king could daydream about sirens and chases, his younger brother Harry (always the joker!) quickly brought him back down to earth: “Oh no, that won’t work! You have to be king!” Can you imagine this moment? The older brother dreams of joining the police, and the younger one says, “Sorry, bro, but the crown is forever!”

At one reception at Kensington Palace, Police Commissioner Jane Richardson even joked, suggesting William should send George and Charlotte to join the force, saying, “We’re currently recruiting new officers!”
Instead of being outraged by such a suggestion, William laughed and admitted that his eldest son is completely obsessed with everything related to the police – from toy cars to actual uniforms! One year, his Christmas gift list only had one item: a toy police car.
