At 41 years old, Mariam from Uganda has given birth to an incredible 44 children, a testament to her strength and resilience. Raising such a large family alone, she faces daily challenges with remarkable determination and creativity. With limited resources, Mariam relies on her ingenuity and occasional charitable aid to ensure her children’s survival, proving her resourcefulness in the face of adversity.
Born in 1980, Mariam’s childhood was interrupted when she was married at a young age to an older man who offered little support. She became a mother as a teenager, initially giving birth to twins. Her journey continued with multiple births, including triplets and quadruplets, a result of a rare genetic condition called hyperovulation, which she inherited from her father. This condition caused her to release multiple eggs during each cycle, leading to frequent multiple births. Doctors advised her to continue having children, as stopping could pose serious health risks.
Without access to contraception and with little support from her husband, Mariam had 25 children by the time she was 23. By 36, she had reached a total of 44 children, including several sets of twins, triplets, and quadruplets. Sadly, six of her children passed away shortly after birth. Her remarkable fertility has made her the most prolific mother alive today.
Mariam’s marriage was marked by neglect and mistreatment, and in 2015, her husband abandoned her, selling their farm and leaving her and the children homeless. Despite these hardships, Mariam fought for the ownership of her home, which she is still paying for in installments. As a single mother, she continues to raise her large family with little external support.
To care for her family of over 60 people, Mariam works tirelessly as an herbalist, seamstress, and hairdresser, and relies on occasional donations to provide basic necessities. Despite living in a modest complex of five homes with minimal furnishings, Mariam and her children face their challenges with unwavering perseverance, continually supporting each other in their journey forward.
