Representatives of Britain’s oldest aristocratic family, Amelia and Eliza Spencer, made a striking public appearance. The 32-year-old twin sisters, who had lived in South Africa for many years before moving to London in 2021, have since been at the center of public attention. The Spencers attended the annual fashion awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall.
The sisters were inspired by one of their famous aunt’s most iconic looks, which became known in fashion history as the “revenge dress” and had a significant influence on pop culture. The twins chose similar total black evening outfits for the event.
Lady Amelia, who married her long-time boyfriend Greg Mallett last year, looked elegant in a floor-length dress with glittering embellishments. Like Princess Diana’s dress, Amelia’s gown had bare shoulders and a very deep neckline. Lady Eliza’s dress also paid tribute to the late princess with a design featuring exposed shoulders.
Princess Diana wore the famous Christina Stambolian dress at the Serpentine Gallery in 1994, the same evening Prince Charles (now King Charles III) publicly admitted to his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, whom he later married. This is why the iconic outfit of the beloved princess became known as the “revenge dress.” For the occasion, Diana wore the famous sapphire necklace and an eight-strand pearl necklace, originally a brooch given to her by the Queen Mother.
The Spencer twins chose equally striking jewelry. The sisters showcased matching diamond necklaces, bracelets, and earrings on the red carpet. Lady Amelia’s delicate necklace consisted of several clusters of diamonds, while Lady Eliza’s necklace had a more intricate design, giving the illusion that the diamonds were floating in the air.
In an interview, the daughters of the Earl of Spencer revealed that they wished they had known their aunt better, as she tragically passed away when they were only five years old. “Unfortunately, we were very young when she passed away. Of course, we would have liked to spend more time with her. We have special memories of her, and they are very clearly etched in our minds,” the Spencers shared.
Princess Diana’s close friend, Anna Harvey, revealed that Diana initially feared the black mini dress would be too bold and had planned to wear a Valentino gown for the event. However, after learning about Charles’s documentary, she decided she wanted to look like a million dollars that difficult evening and chose the color typically worn by royalty in mourning.
