During his boot camp performance on X Factor, Sam Black proposed to his girlfriend, Emma.
Judges Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne, and Louis Walsh decided not to advance him to the next round, bringing his audition to a bittersweet end.
Simon interrupted Sam’s rendition of Del Shannon’s “Runaway,” asking him to sing without the backing track so he could better hear his voice.
After consulting with the panel, Simon dashed Sam’s hopes by sending him home.
“To be completely honest, we all really like you,” Simon said. “But we have to say no, though I think people will genuinely like you.”
“Is there anything I can do before I go? I’m never going to get this chance again,” Sam replied, visibly disappointed. He then called Emma up to the stage.
Sam knelt down and asked, “Do you think I can get a yes from you?”
When Emma said yes, it moved Nicole to tears.
“You’ve got a good guy there,” Simon told her. “That, in my opinion, is probably better than us saying ‘yes.’” Sam joked afterward, “At least I got one ‘yes,’ and that’ll do for me.”
