Grimes, the singer known for her musical experimentation and eccentric lifestyle, has found herself at the center of a scandal not related to her art but to her family affairs. She recently shared details of her challenging custody battle for her three children with Elon Musk.
In a personal blog post, the “Genesis” artist explained, “I spent a year in a constant battle in a state where mothers’ rights are practically non-existent.” Grimes revealed that her social media presence and work as a model were used as arguments against her in court, which led to her being unable to see one of her children for five months. She described this period as one of the hardest times in her life, saying, “During all this time, I fought and tried to let go of the love of my life, who became unrecognizable to me.”
Social media became Grimes’ only outlet to openly discuss what was happening behind closed doors. The 36-year-old artist admitted that the threat of losing her children, combined with financial struggles, deeply affected her creative process. “All I could do was sleep and cry when I wasn’t fighting for my children,” she wrote candidly.
Despite these hardships, Grimes assured her fans that she had “never felt better.” She mentioned that this difficult experience had inspired her to create new music, infused with raw emotion and deep personal reflection.
Grimes made it clear that much of what she has gone through in recent years will remain private. “Most of my experience must stay behind closed doors,” she said, hinting that the true story is far more complex and painful than what the public knows. Still, she emphasized that every hardship she endured made her stronger. “Now, everything that used to worry me seems like child’s play,” she admitted.
The couple, who separated in 2022 after four years of dating, shares three children: 4-year-old son X AE A-Xii, 3-year-old daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, and 2-year-old son Techno Mechanicus. Legal proceedings between Grimes and Musk began in September 2023, with both parties filing custody suits in different states—California and Texas.
Elon Musk has not yet commented on the allegations made by his ex-partner. The billionaire, who has nine children from previous relationships, has faced public criticism before regarding his role in his children’s lives. Recently, Musk became a father for the twelfth time, with the mother being Tesla executive Shivon Zilis.
