Santa is believed to have been modeled after St. Nicholas, the 4th-century bishop of Myra. In the past, bishops wore red and white.
The enigmatic figure of St. Nick, who wore a long green hooded cloak and a wreath of mistletoe, ivy, or holly, symbolized the arrival of spring in ancient times.
