The desire to have a child was so powerful for Mia and Mark that it consumed their hearts, driving them to take any necessary measures to make it a reality.
After many failed attempts to conceive, and spending a great deal on treatments and IVF, they accepted that having a child biologically wasn’t in the cards for them.
They decided to adopt, though it wasn’t as straightforward as they had hoped.
Since Mark was overwhelmed with managing his business, Mia took on the responsibility of handling the adoption process. She contacted agencies, filled out forms, and reviewed lists of children needing a loving home.
While sorting through the files, Mia noticed a young child, possibly around three years old.
They initially wanted to adopt a baby but realized the chances were slim, so they decided to open their hearts to a toddler instead.
The child that caught Mia’s attention had the most breathtaking eyes, the color of the sky. When she saw his picture, she felt an instant connection, as if she had known him forever.
After completing all the formalities, they finally brought Sam home.
He was the most adorable boy, and, more importantly, during the first few weeks, he bonded well with Mia and Mark, even starting to call Mia “mom.”
Life seemed perfect. Mia felt like the happiest person alive as her dream of becoming a mother was realized. She was grateful things were going so well for her and Mark, and life felt joyful.
But one night, everything changed.
As Sam was getting ready for a bath, Mark offered to bathe him. Mia was happy that Mark wanted to spend time alone with their son, believing it would strengthen their bond.
However, as Mark helped Sam undress and get into the tub, he suddenly exclaimed, “We have to give him back!”
Mia froze. “What’s going on?” she wondered.
“How can we return a child, Mark?” she asked.
But Mark seemed determined. He said he couldn’t handle the new life and that everything was too overwhelming.
Mia was devastated and shocked by his words. His sudden change of heart was completely unexpected. But deep down, she knew there was more to the story than he was letting on.
It was a long night. Mia couldn’t sleep, but an idea struck her. Both Mark and Sam had birthmarks on the soles of their feet. She went to Sam’s room to take a closer look, and realized that his birthmark was almost identical to Mark’s.
The next morning, Mia asked Mark if there was something he needed to confess. Overcome with guilt, he admitted that he believed Sam was his biological son and wanted to return him. He was alarmed when he saw the birthmark.
It turned out that Mark had an affair with a woman he met at a bar. Mia was devastated to learn that while she was undergoing the painful IVF treatments, he had cheated on her. He claimed it was a one-time mistake, but the betrayal cut deep.
While Mark clearly regretted his actions, Mia couldn’t get past the fact that he had been unfaithful. She couldn’t stay with him, and so, she became Sam’s sole guardian after Mark relinquished his parental rights.
Though Mark still remained part of Sam’s life through occasional visits and birthday presents sent by mail, their relationship was distant.
When Mia saw that Mark was willing to abandon his son to keep his affair a secret, she realized she had made the right decision for both herself and Sam.
