57-year-old Nicole Kidman gave an in-depth interview in which she subtly criticized director Martin Scorsese for his sexist approach to casting characters in his films. When asked about the directors she would like to work with, Kidman mentioned the 81-year-old filmmaker but noted that he would likely never invite her to star in one of his films, let alone write a role specifically for her.
The Oscar-winning actress is currently at the peak of her career, capable of embodying almost any character on screen. Kidman has worked with renowned directors like Lars von Trier, Stephen Daldry, Baz Luhrmann, and many others.
She made it clear that she has many professional ambitions and expressed admiration for Scorsese’s talent and experience, having directed iconic films such as *Goodfellas*, *The Irishman*, *The Wolf of Wall Street*, and *Killers of the Flower Moon*. Known for his spectacular stories and his focus on charismatic male lead actors, Scorsese has become famous in Hollywood as a master of gangster films, with one of his favorite actors being Leonardo DiCaprio.
Kidman pointed out that the female characters in Scorsese’s films tend to be secondary, merely complementing the male leads. She expressed a desire to work with him but under one condition: that there would be a substantial role for her to play.
“I’ve always said that I would love to work with Scorsese, if he makes a film with women,” Kidman shared.
The 57-year-old Australian actress also listed a few other directors she has not yet worked with, including Kathryn Bigelow, Spike Jonze, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Michael Haneke, expressing her interest in collaborating with them in the future.
Nicole’s sentiments echo those previously expressed by Meryl Streep, who had similarly commented on Scorsese’s lack of focus on female characters. The *Devil Wears Prada* star noted that she would like to see Martin take more interest in female roles from time to time, adding with irony, “I don’t know if I’ll live to see that.”
In the same interview, Kidman revealed that her empathetic nature, while a strength in her acting, can sometimes be a hindrance. The wife of country singer Keith Urban described herself as incredibly empathetic, which allows her to deeply immerse herself in her roles. However, this same trait can also make her take on the pain of others too personally.
Keith Urban also commented on the more intimate scenes in which his wife has appeared. He is comfortable with the fact that Nicole sometimes portrays love and passion on screen, understanding that in those moments, it is not his wife, but her character in a specific story. Keith simply enjoys the art of cinema and admires his wife’s talent.
