After extensive discussions, Kevin Costner announced in June 2024 that he would be leaving *Yellowstone*, citing his ongoing commitment to a special project he has been developing for some time.
Costner has played John Dutton, the tough Montana rancher trying to protect his family’s land, in the hit Western series since its 2018 debut. Across 53 episodes, he has been the anchor of the show. However, in a surprising move, Costner decided to exit after the first half of season 5 (5A), the series’ final season, for a variety of reasons.
Ahead of the November 10, 2024, return of *Yellowstone* for season 5B, Costner was asked about his character’s role given his limited presence in the trailer. He explained, “His presence is integral,” adding that revealing too much would spoil the efforts made to keep the plot under wraps. He acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding his character—whether he is present or not—is due to John Dutton’s importance to the storyline. “John Dutton is still central,” he said.

Director Christina Voros, when asked if the secrecy was linked to Costner’s exit or the show’s rising popularity, confirmed that multiple factors were at play. She noted that fans had strong expectations for the series’ conclusion, and Taylor Sheridan had crafted an ending that would be surprising and captivating. Voros also praised the cast’s performances, saying that after seven years of filming, the actors had deeply inhabited their roles, delivering exceptional work in the final season.

As for Costner’s departure, reports suggest that conflicts over his filming schedule played a significant role. Initially, Costner agreed to a 65-day filming commitment for season 5 but later wanted to reduce his time to just 50 days. For the second half of the season, he reportedly only planned to film for one week due to his other project commitments. By February 2023, Costner was already focused on directing and starring in his own multi-part Western film series, *Horizon: An American Saga*, which he co-wrote with Jon Baird. The films were acquired by New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures.

Costner’s work on his personal project allegedly caused tension with *Yellowstone* creator Taylor Sheridan, leading to dissatisfaction among the cast and crew. While Costner did not provide specifics, he expressed frustration with some of his *Yellowstone* colleagues, insisting that he had always prioritized the show. He suggested that the conflicts had been initiated by others and described the situation as challenging for him, with his heavy workload and creative demands.
