Prince William recently concluded a four-day visit to South Africa, where he presented the prestigious Earthshot Prize and held several meetings with environmental activists and volunteers. On the final day of his tour, the heir to the British throne gave an emotional interview, reflecting on the challenging year he’s had.
In his interview, Prince William opened up about the personal struggles he faced as a husband, father, and son, particularly in light of his family’s health issues. “Honestly? It’s been awful. Probably the hardest year of my life. So, it was tough trying to cope with everything and not lose my way,” he shared, his voice lowering with emotion.

His father, King Charles III, was diagnosed with cancer after a routine prostate surgery earlier this year. Although the king is undergoing weekly treatments, doctors are encouraged by his progress. Meanwhile, Princess Catherine (Kate Middleton) announced in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer. By September, the 42-year-old Princess of Wales revealed that she had completed chemotherapy and was in remission.
Reflecting on his family’s resilience, Prince William expressed pride in both his wife and father. “I’m so proud of my wife, and I’m proud of my father for what they’ve done. But, from a personal family point of view, yes, it’s been tough,” he said. When asked about Kate’s health, he smiled and reassured the public, “She’s doing well. Everything’s good.”
Despite his personal challenges, Prince William’s behavior in Cape Town was noted for being unusually calm. “It’s interesting that you say that, because this year, I haven’t been able to relax, so it’s fascinating how you see it,” he remarked, clearly surprised by the observation.

As he navigates his role as Prince of Wales, William emphasized his intention to forge a different path from his father, King Charles III, and late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. While he admitted that the added responsibility of his new position doesn’t particularly appeal to him, he acknowledged that it provides the opportunity to pursue global initiatives like Earthshot and make a meaningful impact.
“I think you’re right to mention the responsibility and freedom together in one sentence. It’s a tricky question. Do I like more responsibility? No. Do I enjoy the freedom I get to create something like Earthshot? Yes. And that’s my future. What’s important is that I’m doing something good, helping people, and making a real difference,” he stated.

During his tour, Prince William also attended a seaweed innovators exhibition and even purchased a pair of seaweed earrings for Kate. Reflecting on his Earthshot Prize initiative, he described it as the culmination of a lot of behind-the-scenes work, including numerous meetings, calls, and letters. “It requires a lot of work, many unseen processes, meetings, and conversations. Everything is aimed at making Earthshot the most effective project it can be. I’d like it to be more of a team sport,” he added.
The visit wasn’t without controversy, as he faced protests and boos from some members of the public in Cape Town.
