The Chinese architectural studio Chaoffice has renovated a dilapidated building located in northern China, in the Taihang Mountains to the west of Beijing. The project, titled “House of Passages,” involves the restoration of three low, separate structures on a narrow rectangular plot, along with its garden area and basement.
The three individual buildings were connected into a unified volume by small corridors and structures. The open, original constructions and materials sharply contrast with the modern elements.
The studio chose to preserve traditional features in order to maintain the unique charm of a “family home,” while updating the lighting fixtures and systems. Large glass openings were added in several places to bring in more light, and the ancient cellar, which had not been used for 30 years, was also renovated and transformed into a functional space for storing food and supplies.
