In 1942, a chilling discovery was made in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Imagine a lake sitting at an elevation of 5,029 meters in a small valley. During the summer months, the once-frozen water began to melt, revealing a horrifying sight beneath the surface: the lake was filled with over 500 skeletons.
Initially, it was speculated that the remains might belong to Japanese soldiers captured during the war and allegedly killed by the British. Investigators and forensic experts were called in to determine the truth, but the bones were not fresh enough to belong to World War II soldiers. Eventually, it was established that the skeletons date back to around 850 A.D. – the low temperatures and thin air in the region had preserved the bodies remarkably well.
Research into this archaeological and forensic phenomenon has been ongoing for years, with some suggesting that the site may have been the result of an ancient ritual suicide. However, the most intriguing explanation to date is that all these individuals may have died due to an unusually large hailstorm; small deep cracks were found in each skull, indicating fatal blows from above. More than a millennium has passed since the deaths at Skeleton Lake, yet scientists still have many questions to answer.
