A 60th birthday is a significant milestone, and the children wanted to gift their mom an unforgettable surprise by renovating her small but cozy kitchen. Working with a limited budget, they took on the project themselves, infusing it with love and attention to detail.
While the plastic window, installed a few years prior, stayed in place, they removed the old windowsill and replaced it with a wide countertop, turning it into a practical workspace as well as a spot for flowers. The outdated wallpaper was stripped away, and the floor was covered with new tiles. They also concealed the heating radiator with a decorative grille that blends seamlessly with the updated décor.
The furniture set was a bright white, which, contrary to common belief, is easy to maintain and practical. In the compact space, it creates an illusion of openness and fills the room with light. The new work area became spacious thanks to the countertop-windowsill combo. Built-in lighting beneath the upper cabinets ensures a bright, functional workspace without shadows.
The sink was placed in the corner, conveniently near the work area and away from the stove to prevent splashes on the food. The old refrigerator stayed, as they couldn’t afford a replacement just yet, but they plan to upgrade it and hide it behind cabinetry in the future. The only hiccup was placing the microwave on top of the fridge, which mom finds a bit challenging to reach at times.
A small TV was mounted on the wall near the fridge, perfectly situated for viewing while cooking or enjoying a meal. The final outcome exceeded all expectations! Mom was thrilled with her newly transformed kitchen, now filled with warmth, light, and comfort. The children were delighted to create a space that reflected their love and care for her.
