Richard, an elderly man, decides to surprise his daughter, Deidre, by visiting her on his 80th birthday. Upon his arrival, he senses something is off when Deidre acts distant and emotional, insisting it’s not a good time for a visit. Worried, Richard lingers outside and looks through the window, where he sees two intimidating men demanding repayment on a debt from Deidre. Concerned for her safety, Richard witnesses them ransacking her home and taking her belongings.
After the men leave, Richard follows them to a seedy bar and confronts Mr. Marco, the group’s leader, about the debt. He learns that Deidre owes $80,000 from a business loan that she couldn’t repay. Eager to help, Richard offers his life savings of $20,000, but Mr. Marco insists on more. To reduce the debt, he coerces Richard into smuggling contraband across the Canadian border using one of their vehicles.
Realizing the peril, Richard attempts the task but panics when a police dog alerts officers at a gas station. He escapes in the car, ultimately driving off-road into a river, where the vehicle sinks. Barely escaping with his life, Richard returns home and mortgages his house to settle Deidre’s debt. He assures her he will manage the situation, though he is hurt she hadn’t come to him sooner.
Together, Richard and Deidre confront Mr. Marco and his gang. Richard brings the cash, but Mr. Marco becomes furious upon discovering that the smuggled car was lost in the river, along with its illegal cargo. The gangster threatens them with violence, pulling out a gun and aiming it at Deidre. Richard intervenes, pleading to take the blame, but the situation escalates.
Just then, police sirens are heard, causing the gangsters to scatter. The police arrive, and Richard and Deidre hide until they are safely rescued. The car sinking provides critical evidence against Mr. Marco’s operation, leading to his arrest. Richard breathes a sigh of relief, thankful to have escaped both the gang and the law unharmed.
In the aftermath, Deidre feels guilty for dragging her father into her troubles and apologizes. She reveals her business failed and that she was too ashamed to ask for help. Richard reassures her that she’s not a failure, expressing a wish that she had trusted him more, as she used to with her late mother. They embrace, vowing to be more open with each other in the future.
