Sixty-eight-year-old Eric Roberts was a special guest on the podcast “Inside Of You,” where he openly discussed his difficult relationship with his 33-year-old actress daughter, Emma Roberts. The Hollywood father and daughter have not spoken in years, and reconciliation still seems far off.
“It’s not pain, it’s sadness because there will likely always be misunderstanding between us. Because we’re human,” the actor admitted bitterly.
When talking about the estrangement from his daughter, Roberts described that time as “the hardest period of his life.” He also reflected on their differences in his recently released memoirs, published on September 17. When the podcast host asked how long it had been since he last communicated with Emma, Eric replied, “The problem is that it’s indeterminate, so I’ll let you judge that for yourselves.”
He noted that he began to view their conflict differently after the birth of his eldest granddaughter from another child. Emma later had a son, born in December 2020, with her ex-husband Garrett Hedlund. They named the boy Rhodes.
“I started to come to terms with it with the birth of my grandchildren. Especially after the girl was born; she was the first, she was a girl, and I really liked her. She looked so much like Emma and reminded me of what I never had.”
Emma, who is also a successful actress, was born to Eric Roberts, brother of Julia Roberts, by his former partner Kelly Cunningham in 1991.
