While the “angels” were getting ready to take off over the New York catwalk, influencers greeted the arriving stars and asked them a few questions. For example, K-pop singer Lisa told how she watched Victoria’s Secret shows with bated breath as a child and couldn’t believe that she would soon be performing at one. But it was the luxurious and provocative looks of the arriving stars that attracted much more attention. Lisa chose a glowing top and a cape with a pattern of stars, Grammy winner Tayla appeared in a flowing open dress in the brand’s signature color, and the queen of sexy looks Cher came out in a lace bra and leather pants.
Gigi Hadid is the star of the show
The most angelic-faced model, Gigi Hadid, opened the 2024 Victoria’s Secret show, and even wore the largest wings of the entire show – soft pink with hundreds of feathers. The look was complemented by a pink satin set, delicate makeup with soft pink tones, and a “doll” hairstyle with curls curled outward. And although the look was successful, Gigi was subjected to a wild wave of criticism.
Some criticized the model for moving so slowly – but there is an explanation for this, because the wings were probably heavy. However, we have a hunch that if Candice Swanepoel or Adriana Lima had opened the show, fans would have reproached the brand for clinging to the past, continuing to exploit the legendary “angels”. So a new (for the brand) face in the form of Gigi is a controversial, but understandable move.
The Return of Bella Hadid
Bella’s more fatal look made a splash not only because of the voluminous chiffon cape and stunning red lingerie. The youngest of the Hadid sisters got into a major political scandal because of her statements, and also because of the Adidas advertising campaign, so for a long time we did not see Bella anywhere except in street style reports. She was the penultimate at the show – and it was closed by another legendary model, whose appearance no one knew about.
“Angels” are back in action
Along with the “new blood” like Lila Moss and Mia Armstrong, the Victoria’s Secret catwalk was also filled with “old-timers” of the brand – girls who have been participating in shows for decades in a row and have become legends of the lingerie brand. Openness is a place for “fantasies”
In 2018, the House’s chief marketing officer Ed Razek said that the brand was not going to invite plus-size models, since Victoria’s Secret is about a “fantasy world .” Then Razek, who stubbornly did not want to face reality, was forced to do so – after all, his statements brought a wave of hate and hatred towards the fashion house. Later, Razek was completely suspended from business for his connection with the disgraced Jeffrey Epstein, and now the former marketer can only fantasize about how it was before
And after such a total failure, the brand had to wriggle out of it — in particular, to reinvent itself. At the 2024 show, they did this: they invited models of sizes M, L, and XL, allowed girls not to remove the hair on their legs above the knees, invited women older than the starlets to the podium, and also refused some of their “typical” attributes. For example, the carpet this year did not shimmer with glitter, and for the first time, the Fantasy Bra (a bra strewn with precious stones) was not on the show’s “menu”. One of the possible reasons for this is the desire to associate the brand with real women, and not with the world of sweet dreams. It is not for nothing that the main song of the evening was Strong Enough — after all, women are strong enough to accept reality.
