Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. met during the actor’s Broadway debut in New York City. The stars reunited five years after their last collaboration in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The 52-year-old actress shared a photo on the banned social network in which she posed with 59-year-old Downey Jr. backstage at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. “Saw this genius on stage,” she captioned the image.
Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t immediately become close friends. However, Downey Jr.’s charisma was so attractive that the actress decided to find out more about him. To do this, Gwyneth turned to a mutual friend.
“She called my friend and said, ‘What’s wrong with him? Who is this guy?’ She wanted to know if it would hurt her reputation to hang out with me,” Robert told the Associated Press in 2013. Paltrow, in turn, confirmed his words: “He was just a wild man with an unruly character, and I was very naive. I felt sympathy for him immediately.”
In 2007, they finally met on the set of Iron Man, where they played a couple in love. This filming was not only the beginning of their friendship, but also a second chance for Downey Jr.’s career, as it was his first significant work after a long period of struggling with addiction .
