Singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal gave a brief preview at her 2016 America’s Got Talent audition just before her on-stage debut. At twelve years old, she announced, “I’m performing my own song tonight because it truly represents who I am.” Though originally from Kansas, she was living in New York at the time and hoped it would convey her essence.
Her remarkable performance earned her the title of “the next Taylor Swift” and led to a successful career, culminating in a $1 million win on AGT’s Season 11.
When Judge Simon Cowell asked Grace about her confidence in winning, she replied, “Miracles can happen, so possibly.” She emphasized to Simon that her song was personal and mentioned that most of her school friends “don’t really know I sing.”
After her rise to fame on America’s Got Talent, Grace ventured into acting with a role in *Stargirl* and has released several albums. She also stars as a pop singer in Francis Ford Coppola’s *Megalopolis*.
Grace’s friends and AGT viewers quickly recognized her distinct voice and heartfelt songwriting. Accompanied by her ukulele, she captivated the audience from the first note of “I Don’t Know My Name,” a heartfelt song about self-discovery.
As she sang, “My name is unknown to me. I don’t play by the rules of the game,” the judges awaited their verdicts, and the audience fell silent.
Howie Mandel was enthusiastic in his praise, stating, “This is a show about surprises. You called yourself a miracle, and in my eyes, you truly are one.” He noted her originality in the lyrics and predicted that soon everyone would know her name. He then pressed the Golden Buzzer, sending Grace through to the live performances. Overwhelmed with joy, Grace cried as Howie embraced her, telling her, “You are incredible.”
Simon remarked on her ability to draw from personal experiences, saying, “I see a pop star in you. You could be the next Taylor Swift.” He praised her personality as well.
Heidi Klum called her performance “amazing,” while Mel B noted, “She is unique.” When Howie asked Simon if he thought Grace was a star, Simon replied, “I think we’ve got a star,” expressing frustration at not being part of the Golden Buzzer moment.
