Glasgow’s Lucy Falconer started school for the first time this week, and the event would have gone unnoticed by everyone except her family if it hadn’t been for two pictures. Proud mum Gillian took a great photo of her daughter before sending her off to school in the morning.
And then I couldn’t resist taking another picture – when 5-year-old Lucy came home. Look at the difference and you’ll understand.
There are four children in the Falconer family, and Lucy knows first-hand what school is. Here she is with her older brother, preparing to start gnawing on the granite of science.
This is how she left the house that morning. Skirt, stockings, tie, bow. Neat hairdo and a smile – Lucy in anticipation of the first day of school.
And just a few hours later this came home. Even allowing for the sloppiness of small children, Lucy looked unwell, although she didn’t show it.
When her mother asked how her first day at school had gone, the girl answered nonchalantly, “Oh, nothing special.” But her mother noted that her daughter had gone to bed earlier than usual that evening. Well, young Lucy, welcome to the world – childhood is behind you and almost adulthood is ahead. In Scotland, not only do people start going to school at age 5, but most kids are already at their desks in mid-August. Summer holidays are short and now Lucy knows this from personal experience.
Lucy Falconer’s simple story quickly went viral, because every second Internet user saw a reflection of their reality in the combination of the two photos. Some also remembered school, others – universities, and the vast majority described it as their first job or the beginning of a career.
We all set out into the big world with a smile and a bow, and then barely have the strength to drag home a backpack with a unicorn.
But that’s life, nothing can be done.
