Adam Pearson is a British actor, television presenter and activist whose life is an example of resilience and advocacy. Born with neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder in which tumors grow along the nerves, Adam faced numerous challenges, including discrimination and social stigma because of his appearance.
Adam and his identical twin Neil were born on January 6, 1985. At the age of five, Adam suffered a head injury that left him with a lump that never healed. He was subsequently diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type I, a rare genetic disorder that causes benign tumors to grow on nerve tissue and which currently has no cure.
In Adam’s case, the tumors affected his face, significantly changing his appearance. Neil also has neurofibromatosis, but it manifested differently, leaving his appearance unchanged. However, according to Adam, Neil suffers from severe short-term memory problems.
Adam’s illness developed during childhood, which led to frequent easing and humiliation at school. He often felt like an outsider, and on one particularly painful occasion, a group of children tricked him into a confrontation that ended with him being spat on and humiliated in front of his peers.
After advancing from the University of Brighton, Adam worked in television for the BBC and Channel 4. His life changed dramatically in 2011 when he was cast in Under the Skin alongside Scarlett Johansson after being approached by the charity Changing Faces.
