Princess Diana had a strong sense of feeling. She might make a devoted mother and a fantastic friend. Diana had two attributes that made her popular with everyone: generosity and empathy. But Diana was not all that she seemed. She can be brutal in her rage and despise someone deeply.
Unfortunately, Diana’s wrath found its target in Sophie, Prince Edward’s wife. There were rumors at the time that Sophie was a replica of Diana. Edward was looking for a companion who looked like Lady Di since he had fallen in love with his older brother’s wife when she was younger. Tensions between the two ladies were sparked by the media’s constant comparisons between them.
The fact that Sophie, as opposed to Diana, was a favorite of the Queen and the entire royal family made the issue worse. Sophie was at the center of the princess’s ire. Diana would regularly make Sophie cry by making fun of her appearance and clothes. Diana called the fiancée of Edward “my replacement.” Naturally, Sophie’s defense was backed by the whole royal family.
Diana received criticism from Princess Margaret as well as the Queen and Queen Mother.
The latter once said to Diana, “Sophie may be simple, but you’re just a bitch,” in a caustic manner.
