Mahogany Geter, a 24-year-old Tennessee-based aspiring model, was born with a rare illness that results in lymphedema, making her left leg weigh 100 pounds. Her leg is the main part of her body affected by this ailment, which causes fluid to accumulate in the soft tissues, making walking difficult and depleting her energy.
Ever since her diagnosis at birth, Geter has dealt with a lot of mental and physical obstacles. She experienced unwanted looks, remarks, and mocking as a child, all of which negatively impacted her self-esteem. Looking back on her early years, she acknowledged that she felt unattractive and like a “freak of nature,” frequently sobbing in private because of the emotional toll that other people’s emotions took on her.
Doctors suggested surgery as a possible remedy, but Geter decided against it because the results in extreme cases were inconsistent. Rather than pursuing other options, she opted for self-acceptance. In 2017, her path took a good turn when she was recognized by a photographer while working at Walmart. After a period of skepticism, she finally consented to be shot, which launched her modeling career.
Motivated by her aspiration to uplift and advocate for body acceptance, Geter accepted her individuality. She said she was grateful for her mother, who continues to be an inspiration to her, and the support of the online lymphedema community. Geter aspires to become a well-known model to improve her family’s future and increase awareness about lymphedema.
