A couple who constructed a home in the forest talked about their 50 years of off-grid existence.
Since the late 1970s, Dano and Robin have shared a home in the Waialua Valley of Molokai, Hawaii, made of wooden planks. After perfecting their agrarian lifestyle over decades, they are located 30 kilometers from the closest town and away from large businesses and traffic lights. They have never looked back.
The duo claims to “avoid Google as much as possible” and hasn’t watched TV in over 30 years.
Dano and Robin, who are raising four kids in the bush, survive off the plants and animals they collect and carry home in a wheelbarrow. Everything they use or consume on the two acres of property surrounding their home is natural, from the cocoa beans they use to make their coffee to the deer they kill and the herbal medication they make.
The couple was recently visited by American filmmaker Peter Santenello, who captured a “day in the life” of their non-electric existence.
“I didn’t realize how unusual this existence is, but sometimes I look at Robin and think, ‘I haven’t seen another person in a fortnight,’ and I don’t even notice it,” Dano said to Peter.
