Renovating an abandoned mansion: The Rockwell House Before and After

Step into the mesmerizing transformation of The Rockwell House! 🏰✨ From abandoned to astounding, witness the breathtaking before-and-after journey of renovating this once-forgotten mansion.

Rescuing this dilapidated 19th-century home was a labor of love for three astute investors. This once-decaying relic has been meticulously restored, reclaiming its status as a local landmark in Milledgeville, Georgia. The incredible transformation, documented by Leland Kent of Abandoned Southeast, is simply astonishing.

Rockwell House, originally concealed by dense vegetation and protected by imposing wrought iron gates, was built in 1838 for Colonel Samuel Rockwell, a soldier, lawyer, and slaveholder. Designed by architect Joseph Lane in the Federal style with Greek Revival elements, the house features steep steps and towering Ionic columns reminiscent of ancient grandeur.

After 70 years of neglect, Rockwell House was in a severe state of disrepair. However, three young investors saw the potential in this intriguing old structure and took on the challenge of restoring the faded southern belle to her former grandeur.

The renovated mansion, photographed in February 2021, looks stunning. The sunny yellow hue is true to the original facade, with traces of the shade visible beneath subsequent layers of paint. Ochre, a natural color composed of iron oxide, clay, and sand, varies from yellow to deep orange or brown. Utilizing paint research and historical data, the investors recreated this unique and striking color for the home.
