This wonderful tiny home trend is gaining momentum. People prefer to invest in a small piece of land and be their own masters without overpaying for unnecessary square meters. Jenny Kozena, a professional interior designer, tired of the battle for a place in the London sun and moved to California.
Her son-in-law is a professional builder, and together they figured out how to build a tiny but comfortable house for a full life, and how to place it in nature.
– We located it in the land of farmers, this is the spirit of America, the spirit of settlers. In the old days, people slept with the whole family in one bed and no one complained about the cramped space.
Among Gregory’s own relatives were those same migrant farmers; it was important for him to become involved in history, albeit at a more modern and comfortable level.
– I dreamed that our house would look appropriate among nature, so that there would be no dissonance, so that it would not hurt the eyes.
Jenny agrees with her son-in-law, she is also for the environment and against visual noise. They began to build a house as a spare one, away from the main one. Of course it was a great decision. The separate room has two floors. Upstairs there is a bedroom and a place for books, it is very cozy and comfortable.
“I decided to make the highlight of the top floor all those things that people try to keep out of sight. In small houses they avoid overloading with things and try to hide everything. I chose things that are pleasing to the eye; I want to keep them in sight. Therefore, I spent a long time selecting each element so that it would be cozy, but nothing would feel superfluous.
The family wanted the house to have a special atmosphere, a comfortable environment. They even came up with a fireplace! They danced from it, creating an amazing design. The fireplace immediately attracts attention as soon as you enter the house. Nearby there is a vintage-looking sofa, a small bar and even a kind of work desk. There was also a place for a kitchen corner. The furnishings are thought out to the smallest detail, very practical, but aesthetically pleasing to the extreme. Every detail is in its place, the space is divided into zones, and as a result the house does not become a mess, as if a hurricane had swept through. Each activity has its own corner.
– In small houses, all the internal space is dedicated to a specific activity, but we have moved away from this. We turn the living room into a bedroom, the bed leans away from the wall. The cabinet in five sections can be rearranged to adapt to current needs. There is even a place with glass doors where you can arrange a mini-exhibition.
Everyday clothes just hang on a hook at the entrance, as well as towels and bags. But the main part of the clothes is still in the wardrobe to avoid a mess.
The retro kitchen is absolutely charming. There are mosaic tiles and wooden details.
There is no bathroom in the house, you have to wash in the main house, but Jenny installed an outdoor shower. In good weather, she can even lie in the bath right on the site. It turned out surprisingly cozy, there is even a seating area. You can admire nature, invite guests and enjoy going somewhere yourself. After all, she doesn’t need to pay off loans and save every month!
