Restoring Grandeur: A Comprehensive Renovation Journey from Disrepair to Victorian Splendor

Step into a world of Victorian splendor as we embark on a comprehensive renovation journey. Witness the transformation from disrepair to grandeur, and be inspired by the beauty of restoration.

Before

The exterior of this house was in a state of disrepair. I undertook a comprehensive restoration process, which involved removing the vinyl siding, repairing rotted wood, and stripping all old paint from the clapboard, windows, and front columns. Every nail was carefully countersunk and puttied, and any missing wood or trim was replaced to match the original design. The clapboard and trim were meticulously sanded, primed, and painted. The front porch underwent a complete dismantling and rebuilding process, utilizing as much of the original material as possible. Rotted and damaged columns and base columns were reconstructed using a wood epoxy, followed by sanding, priming, and painting. New footings had to be poured for the columns, as the old ones rested on a single boulder that had settled six inches. The front porch was raised, and new bases were crafted for the columns. Additionally, I personally fabricated and installed the railings and new spindles.

After

The physical labor involved was undoubtedly challenging, but I managed every aspect of the project myself, from demolition to the final touches. The most rewarding aspect was the sense of satisfaction derived from restoring this old treasure to its former grandeur. Moreover, the project provided an opportunity to connect with many neighbors in the town as I worked on the house over the years.

In addition to painting the house in authentic Victorian colors, I crafted stained-glass windows for the staircase, front door, and other first-floor windows, incorporating the chosen color scheme. The barn was also painted to harmonize with the house, and period-appropriate landscaping was added. To save costs, I recycled materials wherever possible, completed all the work independently, and crafted many of the missing parts myself. For instance, the front sidewalk was constructed using bricks acquired from a local house that was demolished.
