Before

When Jim and Sandy Barrett settled into their 1930s_cottage_in_Keego_Harbor, Michigan, Sandy described it as “the street’s ugly duckling.” The sparse facade and dull siding presented an uninviting sight, yet they saw it as a canvas for creating a vibrant statement that harmonized with their lakeside setting.
After

Entry: To bridge the gap between the house and the street, they extended the gable roofline forward by approximately 10 feet, aligning it with the existing_facade, and added_a_porch. The addition of simple porch_posts_and_railings, angled_towards_the_walkway, added depth to the space.
Paint: Infused with a beachy vibe, a lively blend of vibrant_turquoise, aqua, and white now adorns the front, paying homage to the area’s resort town heritage.
Landscaping: Replacing a desolate expanse_of_dying_grass, the yard now boasts perennial beds and petite shrubs, with a walkway crafted from pavers acquired at no cost from a friend.
Siding: Opting for fiber cement over the former bent_aluminum_siding, Jim and Sandy invested in durability and charm. Fish-scale shingles_adorn_the_porch area, while wood, cleverly painted to mimic lattice, graces the peak of the roof, adding_character.
Windows: Relocated to the front of the house, the windows now welcome more sunlight compared to their smaller, misaligned predecessors. DIY_shutters, hung_on_hooks for easy removal during painting, provide a finishing touch.
Inexpensive board-and-batten shutters, crafted by nailing_boards_together, proved to be a budget-friendly addition, costing only a few dollars each to make.
