An Abandoned Cabin in Georgia Receives a Magical Transformation

When Tom and Kathy Cotney acquired their lakeside cottage nestled at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, they understood that transforming it into their ideal retreat would require some effort.

“The condition was quite rough back then,” Kathy reminisces with a chuckle. “The first-floor bathroom was actually outdoors.”

Despite its initial state, the 2,500-square-foot abode boasted a coveted location on the shores of Lake Burton, renowned for its scenic surroundings and pristine waters. Eager to create a special family getaway, the Cotneys embarked on a journey to revitalize their lakeside haven.

Positioned at the end of a secluded lane, the house offered a serene setting for the Cotneys and their beloved pets to roam freely. To enhance their outdoor living experience, they installed an outdoor kitchen on the deck, perfect for grilling and entertaining while soaking in the breathtaking views.

Throughout the property, cozy seating areas beckon visitors to unwind and reconnect with nature. An ingenious outdoor shower station near the dock provides a refreshing post-boating cleanse, showcasing the Cotneys’ commitment to both convenience and creativity.

Teaming up with designer Margaret Bosbyshell, the Cotneys envisioned a harmonious blend of rustic charm and timeless elegance for their home. Adorned with Adirondack-style furnishings and accents, the interior exudes warmth against a backdrop of crisp white walls, a transformation that Tom notes significantly expanded the perceived space.

With the guidance of kitchen-and-bath designer Craig Kettles, the kitchen underwent a strategic rearrangement and modernization, maximizing functionality without compromising on style. French doors now open onto screened porches, inviting the outdoors in and expanding the living space.

Innovative solutions, such as a cozy reading nook under the stairwell and a clever rope handrail adorned with a cleat, add character and practicality to the home. Upstairs, Kettles’ ingenuity transformed a modest room into a charming bunk space, accommodating additional guests and enhancing the cottage’s hospitality.

Through meticulous planning and thoughtful design, the Cotneys have succeeded in transforming their run-down cabin into a dreamy lakeside retreat, where cherished memories are made and cherished.
