Remodeling an old renovation in an outdated building 51 m² (before and after photos)

Designer created a bright budget interior for a young couple.

Briefly

The customers are a young and bright couple; they got an apartment with an old Soviet renovation. Designer Anastasia Khmelevskaya was tasked with completely transforming the space and creating a bright, spacious and comfortable interior for living, as well as providing ample storage space. All this was done using simple and budgetary means.

Details

The apartment is located in a standard building of series II-18-01/12. One of the rooms is a walk-through room, there is a kitchen with gas and a separate bathroom. “Since the partition between the bedroom and living room is load-bearing, and the kitchen has a gas stove, we didn’t have many opportunities for redevelopment. But we changed a few things: we removed the mezzanine, combined the bathroom, and made a dressing room in place of the niche in the living room. We were able to fit in a lot of storage and create a work area in the living room.”

The customers wanted to choose a kitchen from IKEA, so the designer had to take into account the standard sizes of the cabinets and assemble a convenient set from them. But the fronts for the upper cabinets were made to order in a bright blue color, this gives the kitchen a special touch.

The kitchen has all the necessary household appliances: refrigerator, gas stove, electric oven, 45 cm dishwasher, microwave oven and washing machine. The stove was positioned based on the position of the gas riser.

Two main colors were used in the interior: terracotta and blue. There is engineered wood on the floors in the living rooms, and paintable wallpaper on the walls. The ceilings are suspended everywhere. The task was to make a stylish but inexpensive renovation. Therefore, we chose budget but high-quality materials and solutions.

Storage systems were selected from IKEA. Even at the planning stage, the dimensions of their wardrobe modules were taken into account. The ELVARLI system and IVAR shelving were used in the dressing room, and two wardrobes were placed in the bedroom.

The bathroom was combined: there was a bathtub, a cabinet with a sink, a mirror cabinet, and a toilet with a hidden installation. I wanted to add something interesting and bright to the interior, so for finishing we selected terrazzo tiles from the Spanish brand Wow. It contains the same shades of blue and terracotta as throughout the apartment. “This tile is one of the highlights in the apartment and one of my favorite details. We put it on the floor, bathtub and on the wall in front of the entrance to make an accent. And for the background we chose plain white Kerama Marazzi tiles. The vanity unit and wall cabinet are from IKEA,” says the designer.
