New life of an old apartment: see before and after photos

Designers have created a modern interior on a small budget.

Briefly

The owner of the apartment is a young man, an art lover and collector, so the designers from the Mirburo studio needed to create a laconic and bright interior. The original layout and appearance of a typical Khrushchev building did not meet the objectives. Therefore, work began with redevelopment in order to accommodate all the necessary areas without compromising life – a spacious storage area, a work desk, a sleeping place and a meeting place with friends.

Details

The main problem was the location of the refrigerator in the kitchen and the washing machine in the bathroom. The solution was to partially add a walk-through corridor to the kitchen (for a niche under the refrigerator). On the hallway side there was a plywood cabinet built to house the washing machine. This is a fairly common solution for such apartments.

The kitchen remained in its place, as did the gas. For approval, a sliding door was provided. The wall between the kitchen and the bathroom was rebuilt using glass blocks. The kitchen is standard from IKEA. The window sill is used as an additional area: there is a kettle on it; additional sockets were made for it at the ends of the window. To prevent the kettle from interfering with the opening of the window, when replacing the windows, the opening transoms were made at the required distance from the window sill.
The budget was limited, so it was immediately clear that the furniture would be ready-made. Basically it’s IKEA. I also wanted to complement the interior with retro details as a tribute to the history of Khrushchev, so the famous bakelite table lamp and an armchair appeared in the interior, found on Avito. The customer’s friend brought the handmade kilim carpet from Iran.
The highlight of the interior is the use of plywood: it is used to make the sliding door to the kitchen, the window sills, the closet in the bathroom and the partition-wardrobe between the kitchen and the living room, where the refrigerator is located on the kitchen side and the washing machine on the hallway side.

The main storage system is a full-wall cabinet from IKEA. At first they wanted to make it to order, but upon calculation it turned out that a ready-made solution would be three times cheaper. The closet contains a compartment for storing a vacuum cleaner, a dryer, stepladders, a compartment for books, the rest of the space is given over to seasonal and permanent items.

The bathtub was replaced with a shower with glass doors. When the pipes were brought in and sewed up to the shower and sink, a protrusion was formed that is used as a shelf in the sink area. A plywood cabinet was made above the toilet for household supplies, and in the shower area this made it possible to provide a niche for shampoos.
The main feature is the glass blocks between the bathroom and kitchen (as a memory of the window that was there before). This is the right decision – the apartment is very sunny and in the summer a lot of light enters the bathroom.
