A bedroom in the attic, a bathroom in the outbuilding, Scandinavian restraint and country romance – we found a small Swedish summer house for a family holiday.
Summer in Scandinavian countries is quite short, which is why their residents strive to enjoy the warm days as much as possible. Many families have country cottages for summer holidays, and they are often located in picturesque corners, surrounded by lush nature. For example, like this small and cozy house in Sweden, on a small island of the Stockholm archipelago.

The cottage was built back in 1944 and initially had a much smaller area: the layout included only a kitchen, a small bedroom and a living room with a fireplace and dining area. Later, a small extension was added to the building, where two more bedrooms and an attic were placed – and the total area of the house increased to 65 square meters.

It is interesting that neither during construction nor during reconstruction there was room for a bathroom in the main house. As a result, the toilet, bathtub, and shower room are located in an auxiliary outbuilding located nearby on the site. But the cottage has enough sleeping places: the main bedroom occupies the attic, the children’s room has a bunk bed, and in case guests arrive, there are two more small guest rooms.
There is also a lot of space for snacks and relaxation: in addition to the main dining area and a nearby recreation area, the house has a bar counter in the kitchen, a table with chairs on the veranda, a small lounge area on the site and another one on the outbuilding terrace.

Despite the fact that the house is intended only for summer living, it also has a fireplace: the Swedish summer is capricious and unpredictable, and in the evenings it can be quite cool.
The interior of the cottage is quite neutral, decorated in Scandinavian style with the addition of country romance. There are a lot of natural materials, a warm light palette, unobtrusive color accents and neat decor – in a word, everything is arranged for a comfortable life, and nothing distracts from the contemplation of the surrounding nature.
