Before and after: even the most “destroyed” apartment can look very cool after renovation.

How to create tropics in an ordinary apartment

To create a stylish design, it is not necessary to purchase an apartment in a new building. Designer Elena Markina has created a modern interior in a simple, small space, with an initially old renovation and an inconvenient layout. See how housing has been transformed.

Redevelopment

Before the work began, the small one-room apartment in the panel house looked quite ordinary: a separate bathroom, a window with a door to the loggia, low ceilings. But Elena decided that there was room to turn around – after all, there was a decent footage and a beautiful view of the Ostankino Tower.

The redevelopment included a large living room and a cozy bedroom with curtains instead of a hallway.

Loggia and kitchen

The loggia was insulated and new glass was installed. The window sill was dismantled, and the standard heating was replaced with vertical heating. Thus, the loggia has become a full-fledged part of the living space.

A total rearrangement was made in the kitchen: the furniture was arranged in the shape of the letter U, and a comfortable area by the window was organized for breakfast.

Hallway and bathroom

The hallway was slightly reduced and a smooth transition into the living room was made. The doors were not installed deliberately – this allowed access to daylight.

The bathroom was combined, making it more spacious. It also features a large cabinet with a quartz countertop and a built-in sink. All the necessary equipment fit there.

Bedroom

The ceilings in the bedroom were almost untouched – they were only lowered a little to install lighting and disguise the curtain rod.

For the upholstery of the sofa and  bed, we chose malachite-emerald Alcantara suede, which adds an element of luxury to the interior due to its premium look. The same material was also used in the decoration of the wall panels – they were additionally decorated with brass fittings.

Storage systems

The bulk of things are stored in closets in the living room and a double-sided closet between the hallway and bedroom. Near the hallway there is a niche for outerwear with shoes, a vacuum cleaner and a router. The closet with built-in lighting, which is located in the bedroom, contains bed linen and clothes for every day.

A special compartment with a curtain for storing utensils is also provided in the corner part of the kitchen. Household appliances such as a mixer are already connected to sockets – all you have to do is pull them out from behind the curtains. This simplifies the everyday side of life as much as possible.

Finishing

The walls in the kitchen and hallway are decorated with aged mirror panels, which seem to expand the room. There is also an Atlas Concorde porcelain mosaic on the floor.

All cabinet furniture was made from MDF according to designer drawings. The cabinets and chest of drawers in the living room, the brass layout on the façade, and the quartz countertops in the kitchen and bathroom look stylish .

The main accent in the design idea was a tropical triptych. The paintings were commissioned by artist Maria Tovbina and hung on the walls.

Also, the walls and chests of drawers were decorated with bright posters , and animal-shaped accessories were placed throughout the apartment. Entering this living space, you feel as if you are in an expensive apartment somewhere in Rio de Janeiro.
