Black and white cottage in Sweden with a perfect terrace.

A couple from Sweden transformed a nondescript summer house by the lake into their dream home in a year, using furniture from the mass market and common clichés. We’ll tell you what came of it.

You can search for years for the country house of your dreams, scrupulously study the real estate market, compare, hesitate… and stumble upon the right option completely by accident. For example, the couple Camilla and Johan discovered their ideal home during a summer walk around Värmde, one of the islands in the Stockholm archipelago. True, the decisive factor was the beautiful view of the water area rather than the building itself: it will be completely redone next summer.

Over the course of a year, the house was enlarged, the wiring and windows were replaced, the kitchen and bathroom were renovated, and the attic was turned into  an attic guest room where friends of the couple’s daughter usually stay. Now you can live in the house all year round, and not just in the summer, as it was before. In addition to the main house, a smaller house was built, having previously received permission from the local municipality.

Both outside and inside, both houses look stylish and very cozy, and this is entirely the merit of Camilla. She is a designer, so the girl took upon herself all the work on decorating the exterior of the houses, interiors and terraces.

Her idea was to create light, “breathable” interiors with simple furniture made from natural materials – rattan, jute, cotton. The furniture, by the way, is quite affordable, mainly IKEA and H&M Home. And for a spectacular picture, Camilla painted the facades in contrasting black and white colors. “It always works,” the designer is convinced.

But the main focus is, of course, on the terrace. For Camilla and Johan, it looks like a patio straight out of the pages of an interior gloss. And it seems that the owners of the house did not invent anything new: there are cute clichés all around, like wicker furniture , soft pillows and bedspreads, decorative trees in knitted pots with thin trunks and lush “caps” of leaves. But why reinvent the wheel? Whatever one may say, this is what an ideal terrace looks like.
