What the designer did on 16 m²: before and after.

We contacted the designer to get another version of what happened.

Last year, the editors of the “Housing Question” program received an application from a couple from Moscow: Larisa and Ivan wanted to transform a room with a low ceiling, with an area of 16 m², into a cozy living room, in which, in addition to a relaxation area for the whole family, there would be a place to store things and working corner.

Larisa, a graphic artist, loves deep, rich colors, but does not dare to use them in her own interior. Ivan, who works partly in Holland, loves restraint and the philosophy of reasonable consumption. This is what the designer offered the couple.

First of all, I needed to work out a functional planning solution. The room contains the main things of the owners, so we placed built-in wardrobes along the wall of the entrance to the room – this way there was twice as much storage space as before the remodel. The depth of the window sill was increased and thus created additional space for relaxation. Shelving was placed to the right and left of the window; we didn’t forget about the workplace – it became very cozy. The sofa was provided with a sleeping place. Sliding mirrored doors isolated the living room from the rest of the rooms.

A deep shade of Burgundy wine was chosen for the walls, while the cornice part was left several shades lighter – this technique made it possible to achieve the effect of higher ceilings than in reality. Against the background of this shade of the walls, natural materials look advantageous: parquet boards in honey-tinted oak, natural veneer for finishing the window sill and shelving. A graphite velor sofa with pillows will add coziness, and mirrored sliding doors will enhance the effect of expanding the living room space.

As a decorative accent, I chose a printed copy of a work by Northern Renaissance artist Rogier van der Weyden. To prevent the copy from looking banal, we added ironic strokes of paint in a contrasting color.

It seems to me that we managed to take into account and implement the wishes of the owners and create a cozy space where all family members can gather.
