The designer relied on light colors and the absence of partitions. I also saved my budget with the help of IKEA and a couple of little tricks.
Designer Maggie Burns received this commission from her close friend and her husband. They moved from Toronto to New York, bought a second-hand house and began a major renovation. According to the couple, the most serious remodeling required was the dining room and kitchen “the size of a shoebox.”
What did the kitchen and dining room look like before the renovation?
The tiny kitchenette was completely isolated from the dining room. Everything had to be changed – from decoration to furniture and utensils. The interior of the dining room was also far from ideal. The couple decided to get rid of the gray walls and create a bright and cozy space for family time.

What changed?
All! First of all, Maggie suggested getting rid of unnecessary partitions between the kitchen and dining room. Now there is a lot of light and air, and cooking has become much more convenient.
True, part of the partition had to be left – this is where the electrical wiring ran. They made a wide opening in the wall, and that was enough.
Instead of tiles, a warm-colored board was placed on the floor – it contrasts well with the white walls. If you choose a high-quality option and cover it with a protective layer of varnish or oil, you don’t have to worry about high humidity in the kitchen.

The place of the dining table was taken by a functional kitchen island. Here you can dine together and have a get-together with friends. But most importantly, there are many storage spaces inside the island where it is convenient to hide household appliances and other kitchen utensils.

Pay attention to the tabletop: it seems that it is made of a single piece of marble. But in fact, the tabletop is made of porcelain and painted to resemble marble. It looks realistic, and at the same time is much cheaper than natural stone.

In addition to the island, Maggie included plenty of storage space. We purchased kitchen cabinets from IKEA, and this also helped save money. At the same time, beautiful cabinet doors were ordered separately – customers could afford such a whim after saving a decent amount of money on their budget.
The doors were painted light gray to slightly dilute the snow-white color scheme. It would seem that the difference in shades is quite small, but the interior immediately became warmer and more comfortable.
Before the renovation, the designer asked clients to take a complete inventory of kitchen utensils and leave only the essentials. Based on this, the number of cabinets and drawers was calculated so that each pot and pan had its own place.

How to arrange a stylish and functional kitchen-dining room?
- Do not skimp on finishing: use moisture-resistant paint and high-quality materials for the floor. Then you can avoid making repairs for a long time.2
- Leave more open space: down with partitions!
- Use a kitchen island: it’s more convenient than a table, + additional storage space.
- Don’t be afraid of shopping at IKEA – they can always be modernized.
- Find high-quality imitations of expensive countertop materials.
- Carefully think through the storage of dishes and kitchen utensils (and get rid of everything unnecessary).
