How an attic was turned into a thoughtful bedroom.

In just a month, an ordinary clapboard attic was converted into a colorful bedroom with a dining area and a place for reading.

Designer Yulia Bortnevskaya designed an attic area of 25 square meters for a married couple. There were only walls and a roof with a height difference of 68 cm to 2 m. Everything was upholstered with clapboard and looked dull. The author of the project told how they managed to breathe life into the interior.

Layout

Initially, the attic was used as a sleeping area. I managed to divide the space into several zones: a dressing room, a relaxation area with a sleeping place and a soft sofa for reading books, a workplace that transforms into a dining room, and a fireplace to create an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility.

Color palette

The shape is emphasized by color. Famous artists – Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian – created shape and geometry in their works through color. In my case, with the help of color, there is a vertical division of space – thereby increasing the height of the attic. I also zoned the attic room with color, killing two birds with one stone.

The windows, like the light, are highlighted in black. This sets rigor and a certain proportionality to the room. Black color is used in moldings, partitions, decor, lighting – it runs as an accent leitmotif throughout the entire interior.

Finishing

The decoration of the room used paint, soft wall panels, a slatted system and a feature – phytowall. The soft area is decorated with wall panels. The working-dining area is decorated with plants framed by slats, with lighting in them. The dressing room is highlighted in a contrasting color, and the fireplace is framed by moldings that combine the bed area with the fireplace and create a feeling of privacy and comfort.

Initially, we wanted to use decorative plaster to make the interior more interesting, but this type of finishing is more expensive and takes longer to apply. And we only had a month for the entire project and renovation.

Storage systems

The attic has its own dressing room, which is separated by a partition rather than walls, so as not to burden the interior. Plenty of storage space is provided under the soft area near the window. The facades are made to order, which gives them special sophistication.

Furniture and decor

The furniture is selected taking into account the style of the room. The bed has a soft headboard, which is entirely handcrafted. The decor is a collector’s edition of “Russian History in the Lives of Its Main Figures” by N. I. Kostomarov, dishes and plants are selected to match the colors of the main accents of the interior.

Blinds are used instead of curtains. The bed has its own soft headboard, designed and made to order. Thus, the bed only has a frame, which costs less.
