How designers updated the interior of a log house (before and after photos)

After the renovation, the house became brighter, more comfortable, there were more bedrooms and recreation areas for adults and children

Briefly

Designers Ekaterina Parshintseva and Ekaterina Erokhina from RodenHome designed a log house for a family with two children. The task was to make the interior light, comfortable and relevant for a long time – so that it wouldn’t get boring in the next ten years. At the same time, it was important to provide a large number of sleeping places for the owners and their friends with children who come to visit.

Details

The customers rented this house every summer as a summer cottage and eventually decided to buy it. Therefore, the architecture of the house remained original; the designers improved the layout and updated the decoration, taking into account the wishes of each family member. The budget was limited, the deadlines were also tight – in the end, the renovation was completed in 5 months.

“The project is called Granat, because the house itself is painted brown-red, while inside, light walls separate completely different rooms, just like bright grains are separated in a pomegranate. The idea of the project is to make all the rooms with an individual character, so that both owners and guests will find something of their own in them,” say the designers.

The customers fell in love with the house for its layout, the surrounding forest and the atmosphere of the space as a whole. But I didn’t like the rather old-fashioned solutions in the interior and the frankly red “wooden” color of the logs. I wanted the house to be cozy and enveloping, calm and soft. Therefore, we decided to repaint the walls with durable Tikkurila wood paint.
“The furniture was selected taking into account the customer’s character and his love of travel. For example, a barely noticeable safari spirit appeared in the living room – a tribute to the owner’s numerous travels: a skin on the floor, “colonial-style” furniture, a flower stand made from real travel suitcases,” say the designers.
The layout did not allow for an additional dressing room on the second floor, so separate storage systems were installed in all rooms. The sloping roof of the attic floor did not allow the placement of full-fledged wardrobes: this is how individually shaped wardrobes, spacious and convenient for use, appeared in the master bedroom.
In the nursery, interesting headboards with children’s names in capital letters appeared. If necessary, each bed can be pulled apart to create two additional beds.
All the walls were repainted in soft cream shades as a background. One of the guest rooms, a room in a soft blue and white palette, was codenamed “honeymoon room.”
The second guest room turned out to be bright and hot, with curry-colored accents; the designers in absentia called it “Indian” – there lives a table in the shape of an elephant, brought from Asian countries.
