The backstage of the coronation seriously outraged the British. A documentary about Charles III’s accession to the throne showed the life of the royal family leading up to and on the day of the ceremony. The BBC television channel, which broadcast the premiere, received 897 complaints, writes the Daily Mail. How many dissatisfied viewers were too lazy to send a letter and simply switched the channel, one can only guess. It is reported that the television program became the absolute leader in anti-ratings in the second half of December: the program was the only one about which more than 100 people complained.
The main complaint of TV viewers is the lack of objectivity and an “overly positive” view of the monarchy. Interestingly, the broadcast of the ceremony in May also caused a storm of criticism, but not because of claims against the new monarch. Then viewers filed more than eight thousand complaints because of a comment by black British actress Adjoa Ando, who said on air that the balcony of Buckingham Palace was “terribly white.”
The channel’s editors did not hush up the topic and responded all at once on the official BBC website. The channel’s management did not see any problems in the film, since critical programs are regularly aired, for example, with analysis of the royal family’s spending and discussions on the relevance of the monarchy in the modern world in general. So the cheesy documentary could be seen as a Christmas present for a king who is already having a hard time .
