On the ultrasound, the expectant mother saw two little hearts. Annabel and Isabel shared a liver, intestines, bladder, and one leg between them.
Each girl had her own “personal” leg, but their bodies were so tightly intertwined that even experienced surgeons couldn’t immediately determine whether a safe separation was possible.
The twins were born in March 2022 at a London University Clinic. Immediately after birth, they were transferred to one of the UK’s leading children’s hospitals.
There, doctors began extensive preparations for surgery, needing not only to separate their bodies but also to ensure each sister could live and develop independently.
Months passed. The medical team studied scans, 3D models of organs and blood vessels, and practiced on virtual simulations.
