Today, on January 9th, the British royal family member turns 43. Prince William shared a heartfelt personal message to mark his wife’s birthday, posting a black-and-white photo of Kate Middleton that had never been seen before. In the picture, Middleton posed in an elegant casual outfit—pairing a white blouse with a dark blazer and high-waisted jeans.
She completed the look with a cozy checkered scarf, and the outfit highlighted the slim figure of the Princess of Wales. Smiling at the camera with her hands in her pockets, she also showed off her famous engagement ring, featuring a Ceylon sapphire that once belonged to Princess Diana. Middleton wore subtle daytime makeup with a focus on her eyes and styled her hair in her signature bouncy curls.
William wrote a touching message to his wife after a challenging year for their family. In March, Kate revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer, and by September, she shared that she had completed her chemotherapy and was in remission. “To the most incredible wife and mom. The strength you’ve shown over the past year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis, and I are so proud of you. Happy birthday, Catherine. We love you,” the prince wrote, adding the initial “W” at the end, signaling that the message came directly from him, not from the royal staff.
This personal message and previously unseen photograph are unusual for the royal family, especially on a day when no milestone is being celebrated. It’s one of the most emotional birthday greetings William has ever shared for his wife. The photo was taken last summer by royal photographer Matt Porteous in Windsor, six months before the princess withdrew from public view. Matt has photographed William, Kate, and their children many times, accompanying them on royal tours.
Princess of Wales was also congratulated today by King Charles III and his wife Camilla. On the monarch’s social media page, a photo of Kate from her most recent public appearance was shared. Middleton, dressed in an emerald outfit and elegant hat, had joined her husband, children, and other royal family members for a Christmas service at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham. “Happy Birthday, Princess of Wales!” wrote the 76-year-old monarch and 77-year-old queen consort.
This past year has also been challenging for Kate’s father-in-law. In February, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer. In accordance with royal policy, the type of cancer has not been disclosed. Sources reported at the end of December that the king would continue his treatment this year.
