The 78-year-old Cher is preparing to release her memoirs, with excerpts from the book titled *Cher: Memoirs, Part One* already making waves online. In the text, Cher opens up candidly about her personal life, including her relationships with men. In 1975, Cher and her partner Gregg Allman welcomed their son Elijah Blue, after which the couple decided to marry. Their wedding took place in Las Vegas that June, just four days after Cher officially divorced her first husband, Sonny Bono.
“Nothing romantic happened on our wedding day. There was no honeymoon either,” the star recalled.
However, the marriage lasted only nine days, after which Cher decided to file for divorce. The week following their wedding, the singer discovered illegal substances in their home that belonged to her husband and also learned from friends that he was planning to leave her. Cher then issued him an ultimatum.
“I told him on the phone, ‘I’m so tired of all this, Gregory. I’m so tired of going with you to rehab,'” she recalled. “He was silent on the other end of the line, and then quietly said, ‘But I will keep trying.’ His response left me confused because it was true. He really did continue going to rehab, trying to quit, making efforts despite his past failures. At that moment, instead of thinking about my own exhaustion, I sympathized with him.”
Cher continued to support Allman, and the divorce was temporarily put on hold. However, her patience eventually ran out.
“My breaking point came soon after one night when Gregory had a paranoid breakdown and said he saw armed people in the backyard,” she confessed. “It wasn’t safe for the children. It only happened once, but I couldn’t take the risk.”
The couple separated again, and their divorce was finalized in January 1979. In 2017, Gregg Allman, the leader of The Allman Brothers Band, passed away from liver cancer at the age of 69, and Cher attended his funeral.
