Family quarrel: “My mother-in-law celebrates her birthday at the same time as my son, but she does not want to move the party”

A birthday is always a special occasion, but there are even more important ones that deserve special attention, such as the first year of a child’s life or turning fifty. But what if that particular birthday falls on the same day as a grandmother and her grandson? This is the dilemma that recently plagued a mother, who asked her mother-in-law to getting away to celebrate his grandson’s first birthday in the best possible way.

“My mother-in-law loves celebrating her birthday. When I was pregnant, she kept joking that if I gave birth on her birthday (2 days before the due date), I had better keep it inside. Well, karma delivered it on her birthday and she was far from thrilled. She came to the hospital for about ten minutes and rushed off saying she had things to do,” the woman explained.

This year, the woman turns 50, while the little one is on his first birthday and the day falls on a Saturday. “I thought with great enthusiasm that I could throw her first party on the same day and immediately started making plans,” the mum continues. However, her mother-in-law was already planning her party and asked her to move or postpone the baby shower. “I thought it was ridiculous because one of the two celebrants is a small child and it’s not her. I know that technically we could have his party in the afternoon and his in the evening, but my in-laws throw crazy events. Her 40th birthday had the dimension of a wedding and required a lot of preparations, hairdressing, makeup, so that I had no time to prepare.

The mother therefore refused to move the date of the baby’s birthday, which angered the mother-in-law because the baby “will have no memory of this day”. It was also not possible to share the event, because the mother-in-law had organized a very fancy party for the “adults” with cocktail dresses and music until two in the morning.

“I told her she was being a whiner and that she needed to move on and put the problem behind her. I explained to him that he was a small child, that his first birthday was more important and that she could celebrate her 50th birthday another day”, continues the mother. The mother-in-law refused to move the date of the party and stopped talking to her and her son. “Now the whole family is going to their party and I think that’s very selfish behavior. My husband’s sisters are angry with me and now they don’t talk to us,” the mother concluded, asking the web for advice on what to do.

Users have been diplomatic, tending to agree with his mother-in-law : “The first birthday is important, but you can celebrate it at lunch or the next day. No one wants to go to a children’s party on a Saturday night. Also, the little one will have no memory of the day and will most likely fall asleep within an hour. Objectively, it is easier to organize the two parties at different times or to leave the 50th birthday for Saturday evening and the first for Sunday afternoon, which are certainly more appropriate days for both events. It’s a question of maturity.”
